Movie 'college' dresses

I wasn't supposed to buy any new fabric, having accumulated a lifetime's supply in my sewing room, but I couldn't let this beautiful stuff pass by.
It was called Movie College print but I'm pretty sure they meant collage.
I thought I'd make one dress but ended up having enough for two! How terrible! Not!

First dress.

I used this New Look pattern for both bodices. For the first dress, I used the bodice from view D. I just used a long rectangle for the skirt and gathered it onto the bodice. It's a really easy, cheaty way to make a skirt.

I love how the print sits across the bust. I actually didn't plan that.

Then I used this gorgeous pattern I found in an op-shop to make a jacket to wear with it.

The pattern of the jacket is boxy and hip-length, so I cropped it at the waist, and added a couple of wide darts at the back to make it more fitted. I also lowered the neckline by a couple of inches.

Dress number two.

For this I used the bodice from view B. I can't remember where I got the pencil skirt pattern from but it's pretty basic anyway.

I made the skirt in brown, as black was too harsh. The black in the 'college' print is actually faded to brown, so the brown skirt works better.

Oh, this? I'm just practicing my over-the-shoulder-and-over-the-glasses gaze. You know.

The Sewing Machine dress

I've managed to fit some sewing into my all-too-brief holiday this week (going home tomorrow, boo hoo!)

Pattern: Vogue 8727
View E (the blue version in the design images)

This is the same pattern as the Green Marilyn Dress

(This is Mac. He always likes to get in on the action and see what everyone's doing. He'll be featured, along with the other animals who live here, in a couple of posts coming up.)

Oh, hello! There you are!

I love the print of  this fabric. I bought it not knowing what I wanted to make with it, so I bought lots and consequently have a lot left over. I think I'm going to make a bag to go with the dress

The dress is a little bit too long, and a little bit roomy around the waist. I've left it like this deliberately because I forgot to pre-shrink the fabric before I sewed the dress. I'll wash the dress before I see whether any alterations are necessary.

The next couple of posts will probably be filler posts... I actually have to move house AGAIN
(and if you're thinking I moved house not so long ago, you're right... my house is being sold AGAIN, damn renting) so I will be off the radar for a while.
The good news is I have many animal photos to post in the meantime.

Midweek and I'm over it already. I will not smile.

Interesting that the dress with which I began to fully realise my femininity I now decided to wear with men's shoes. Before I made this dress, my idea of dressing up was to wear my 'good'  black jeans.

....before hitting Helgastock 2013! (where I forgot to take any photos. Very clever). I met Sister Sarah, Helga! and Carli and a couple of other lovely lasses whose names and websites have completely slipped my mind! I'm sorry! Please remind me. I had so much fun and dinner was lovely. I wore this dress and this coat. No doubt someone will have photos up on their blog or Facebook sooner or later.

dressing gown - opshop
purple booties - Target

Saturday

An overdue photo shoot of opshop finds

Boob-squash dress

Also experimenting with hair extensions...

(further evidence of boob squash below)

....and camera focus... (grrr)

Hair extensions are good for hiding one's bra straps...

...until one forgets to fling one's hair over them.

The lace dress is what I'm showing off here. It didn't come with a slip but clearly requires one.

Sunday

I am attempting to photograph milk as it billows up through a cup of tea.

It is one of my favourite sights and I think I will continue to try and capture it accurately. Prepare for many tea and milk photos.

(How many effing photos have I used in this post??)

There will be more filler posts of work wear and opshop finds while I continue work on my winter sewing project. Sewing posts will be scarce for the next month or so.
