Wide leg jeans

Jeans or trousers are something I don't make very often. I don't wear them often and/or I prefer skinny leg styles.

Saying that, I do love high waisted, wide leg styles but I find they're not so easy to come by or terribly flattering.

This pattern is Vogue 8751. I've been wanting to make some good quality denim trousers and this is a great simple pattern to start with. I'll get to things like studs and pockets when I'm more familiar with such a heavy fabric.
V8751
I used a mid weight denim with no stretch for these in size 12. No alterations required. I used a narrow hem at the lower leg edge so I can turn these up into nice cuffs (although they'll hover above my ankles if I do so that option probably won't be taken).

I only have two issues with these. One is my fault; I placed the lower hook and eye closure too far out and you can see it. No big deal but annoying enough for me.

The other issue is that these make my backside look really flat! I mean I'm no Coco Austin but this is not a good look! I don't like this photo much but you can see what I mean here. Possibly I could take in the seam a little around the back but I'm not going to touch these now that they're done. I'll experiment with another pair.

Also, how cute is my top!? It's a Rock Steady top from Mod Cloth but I got it a while ago so I think it will be sold out now.

Anyway, there you go. Jeans. Now I just have to wear them.

The end.

  1. I love flares. Period. These are amazing - the fabric, the way they make you look six feet tall and your fly front zip! Very clever indeed. I'm watching series one of The Great British Sewing Bee and they had to make a pair of men's trousers with a fly-front. Most of them got it wrong. You didn't. xoxoxoxoxo

  2. I think they look really good on you. I prefer wide leg jeans because they are more flattering on my shape than skinny jeans and I can breath in them. I have three pairs and I love them {wide leg jeans that is}. None of homemade though.

    1. Thanks Sean! It is indeed a very comfortable style to wear and a nice alternative to the inevitable skinnies which are just everywhere now.

  3. the dark denim looks great with the gingham top ... i still wait to find a flatting pair of wide legged and (super) high waisted pants that fits ... pants still don't like me. ;)

    1. Thanks, I really like them with the top too! You've pretty much explained why I decided to make these - so hard to find a pair which is flattering AND fits well.

  4. They look fabulous, well done you! The only sort of jeans I like are high waisted indigo flares which I have yet to see for sale but anyway, they would not look good on me at all, I'm far too big in the hip.

  5. They do make your hot arse look a little flat, but otherwise, you look AMAZING in them! I like pants/jeans on everyone but me!!!! I love a boot flare, but these wide legs are really funky!
I've made a lot for G, and he loves a boots flare best, usually.

    1. Thank you! I knew I wasn't imagining my flat bum. Must remedy this with the next pair. I have a fantastic pattern from 1970-something for some flares which are absolutely massive and lots of fun to wear.

  8. They look great! You'll find lots of fun ways to wear them as it gets colder - like with a cute little sweater.
Is your hair black? It's really cool!

    1. Hey Bobbi! My hair was black (dyed), then I lightened it and used a dark permanent purple over it. There are places where it didn't take so it's kind of both now. I did wear the jeans with a little cropped cardi the other day and it looked great :)

  9. These are awesomely flattering on you!!! I have such a woefully hard time finding jeans and trousers that fit even half decently and when I do they're pretty much always straight or wide legged styles. I absolutely do not have the slender legs needed to pull of skinny styles well.

Big hugs & many thanks for all of your great recent blog comments,

    1. Thanks Jessica :) I agree it can be painfully tedious trying to find a pair of jeans which are flattering and also fit well. And you're welcome!
